A woman’s risk of fathering a child with Down syndrome increases after she is 35 years old. However, most children with Down syndrome are born to women under the age of 35 because younger women have many more babies.

People with Down syndrome can have a variety of complications, some of which become more serious as they age. These complications can be:

Heart defect. About half of children with Down syndrome are born with a congenital heart defect. These heart problems can be life-threatening and may require surgery in early childhood.
Gastrointestinal defects (GI). Gastrointestinal abnormalities occur in some children with Down syndrome and can include abnormalities of the bowel, esophagus, trachea, and anus. The risk of digestive problems such as gastrointestinal blockages, heartburn (gastroesophageal reflux disease) or celiac disease may be increased.
Immune diseases. Because of abnormalities in their immune system, people with Down syndrome are at increased risk of developing certain autoimmune diseases
