- In adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), your body cannot break down very long chain fatty acids (VLCFA), which leads to the formation of saturated VLCFAs in your brain, nervous system, and adrenal gland.
- The most common type of ALD is X-linked ALD, which is caused by a genetic defect on the X chromosome. X-linked ALD affects men more than women who carry the disease.Adrenoleukodystrophy Treatment Hyderabad
X-linked forms of ALD include:
- ALD early childhood. This form of X-linked ALD usually appears between the ages of 4 and 10 years. The white matter in the brain gradually becomes damaged (leukodystrophy) and symptoms have appeared over time. If not diagnosed early, childhood ALD can lead to death within five to 10 years.
- Addison’s disease. The hormone-producing glands (adrenal glands) often don’t make enough steroids (adrenal insufficiency) in people with ALD, leading to a form of X-linked ALD known as ADD. Addison.
- Adrenomyeloneuropathy. This adult X-linked form of ALD is a milder, slowly progressive form that causes symptoms such as a stiff gait, bladder and bowel dysfunction. Women with ALD can develop a mild form of adrenomyeloneuropathy.Adrenoleukodystrophy Treatment Hyderabad
